Where do the cameras go?
The cameras should be placed towards the eyeline of the performer/s while taking care of audience experience.
The position of cameras is a choice which must include the size and shape of the venue. In general we follow some simple rules. Cameras should be roughly at eyeline to the camera. If the rake is too steep, cameras should try to be placed further forward, so the camera is not “looking down”.
Whilst our cameras are designed to be inobtrusive, it can distract audience members. That’s why we try to pick positions where the audience can’t see the cameras at all. Unless you want them to. Cameras most often occupy the back row of seats. It’s important that these seats are not in an audience pathway. If the seats can be killed completely, excellent. A perfect scenario is a high stool. A seated videographer, is a steady videographer. Camera positions should always be approved by the venue, so be sure to contact them beforehand.
If we’re shooting with multiple cameras, we might have one set of seat kills, or two in separate areas.
If the cameras are in separate areas, they should ideally be at the same height to each other.
